Robot batteries: life, replacement and storage
The battery is the part of a robot most likely to wear out, and it's often covered by a shorter warranty than the robot itself. Here's what makers say about battery life, what replacements cost, and how to store a mower or pool robot so the battery survives the off-season.
The short answer
- Expect years, not decades. iRobot says a well-cared-for Roomba battery should last at least 2 to 3 years; Dreame says 2 to 5 years, or about 300 to 500 charge cycles.
- Battery warranties can be shorter. An iRobot warranty document covers the battery for six months against a year for the robot.
- Replacements cost real money and are sometimes out of stock. Check before you buy that the maker sells one.
- Storage rules differ by maker. Husqvarna says store a mower fully charged; Beatbot says store a pool robot at 50 to 80%. Follow your own manual.
How long a robot battery lasts
Robot vacuums, mowers and cordless pool robots use lithium-ion batteries, which lose capacity a little with every charge cycle and with age. You'll notice it as shorter runs: a vacuum that used to finish the house now returns to recharge midway.
- iRobot: with proper care, the battery should last at least 2 to 3 years.
- Dreame: anywhere from 2 to 5 years and about 300 to 500 charge cycles for modern lithium-ion batteries.
Both figures are the makers' general guidance, not tests of a specific model. A robot that runs daily uses cycles faster than one that runs twice a week.
Looking after it
- Charge at room temperature, out of direct sun. iRobot gives this advice for Roombas.
- Don't leave it flat for months. iRobot says fully charge at least every six months; Dreame says recharge every three months if the robot isn't used.
- Leave the battery to a technician if the maker says so. Dreame says only qualified technicians should remove or replace its batteries. Some robots, like many Roombas, have user-replaceable packs; check your manual.
What a replacement costs
Official prices we found on October 12, 2026:
- iRobot lithium-ion battery for e, i and j series Roombas: $99.99, shown out of stock.
- Mammotion battery for the LUBA mini AWD 1500 and YUKA mini 800: $209, shown sold out.
We couldn't find official US replacement-battery listings for several other brands. Both listings we found were unavailable that day. That's the real lesson: before buying any robot, search the maker's US store for a replacement battery for that model. If none is listed, ask support how battery replacement works and what it costs.
Battery warranties
| Maker and product | Robot warranty | Battery |
|---|---|---|
| iRobot robot vacuums | 1 year | 6 months |
| Roborock robot vacuums (US) | 1 year | No separate battery term stated |
| Roborock robot mowers (US) | 2 or 3 years by model | 2 years |
| Beatbot pool robots | 24 or 36 months by model | Included in the main-body warranty |
From each maker's warranty terms, read October 12, 2026; iRobot's terms from an older iRobot warranty document hosted by a retailer; check current terms. Warranties change, so check the terms for your model at purchase.

Storing a mower or pool robot for winter
Seasonal robots spend months unused, which is hard on batteries. Makers disagree on the right charge level, so the rule is: follow your model's manual. Two examples:
- Husqvarna Automower: fully charge the mower and switch it off before storage, and store it indoors above freezing. Husqvarna says most models need no charging during storage, though some need charging every three months.
- Beatbot pool robots: store at about 50 to 80% charge, somewhere between roughly 5°C and 45°C (41°F and 113°F).
Whatever the maker, store it dry, indoors, and away from freezing temperatures, and recharge on the schedule your manual gives.
Battery safety
Several recent robot recalls have involved batteries or chargers overheating, including Husqvarna's AWD mowers in 2022 and several cordless pool robots since 2023. Use the charger that came with the robot, don't charge a damaged battery, and register your robot so you hear about recalls. See recalls and safety standards.
What this means when you buy
- Check that the maker sells a replacement battery, and what it costs, before you buy.
- Read the battery warranty, not just the robot warranty.
- Our guides add an upkeep estimate to every robot's 3-year cost: floors, lawns, pools.
