Mow my lawn

The right robot mower depends far more on your yard than on the mower. Measure three things before you shop: the lawn's area, its steepest slope, and how much of it sits under trees. Then pick the navigation type that survives your yard.

These are fit-for-yard matches, not performance rankings. We haven't run our own lawn tests yet, and we won't call any mower "best" until we've seen it work on both an open and a tree-heavy yard. Everything below is matched on published specs and checked prices.

Step 1: Measure

  1. Area. Use your property map or a satellite view to measure only the grass. Buy for the lawn you have plus some margin: manufacturers' ratings assume ideal shapes, and Husqvarna rates its 410 iQ at about half an acre but only about a quarter acre for irregular layouts.
  2. Steepest slope. A phone level app on a long board works. Ratings are in percent: 45% is about 24°, 80% is about 39°.
  3. Tree cover. Stand at the spot where you'd put the charging station and look up. Satellite-guided mowers need open sky; heavy canopy causes dropouts.

Step 2: Pick a navigation type

  • Boundary wire: a wire buried around the edge. Reliable under trees, but you (or a dealer) must lay it.
  • RTK satellite: centimeter-level GPS with a reference station or a network service. No wire; struggles under heavy canopy.
  • LiDAR: laser scanning of surroundings. Copes better with trees and buildings.
  • Vision: cameras to see edges and obstacles, usually combined with one of the above.

Slopes, trees and bigger yards

Steep yards need all-wheel drive; tree-heavy yards need LiDAR, vision, or a wire. The LUBA 3 AWD combines LiDAR, network RTK and cameras; the Husqvarna 435X AWD uses a wire, which ignores canopy entirely.

What every robot mower system needs

  • Power at the charging station. An outdoor outlet within cable reach, ideally protected from weather.
  • A clear sky view for RTK models — for the reference station if one is included (LUBA 3 AWD 3000/5000, Husqvarna's EPOS station) or network coverage if not.
  • Blades. Small pivoting blades wear quickly; Mammotion sells spare sets for $49. Husqvarna includes extra blades and a year of free blades per its FAQ.
  • Edge trimming. No mower here trims cleanly against fences and beds. Plan to string-trim edges every few weeks.
  • A pre-mow sweep for toys, hoses and dog waste.
  • Theft thinking. These are valuable objects left outside. Use the app's PIN and location features, and check your homeowner's policy.

The FCC rule and mowers

Robot mowers that meet the FCC's definition are covered by its July 2026 rule for new foreign-produced models. Secondary reporting names Mammotion and Segway Navimow among affected brands for new models; models already authorized can still be sold. Husqvarna received an exemption on September 9, 2026. Recent changes

Mammotion's US store no longer lists the LUBA 2 AWD. The LUBA 3's $2,399 and $2,799 prices are two different sizes, not a pricing error. Updates log.
